The Tollman family has been carefully curating captivating artwork for its Red Carnation Hotels for more than 60 years. President and founder Bea Tollman and her daughter Toni ensure that every piece enhances each property’s unique character. With paintings by international heavyweights such as Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Lowry and Sem carefully hung throughout the hotels, here we look at where to discover the highlights of our amazing art collection.
The extensive curation of works at The Lodge at Ashford Castle reads like the ‘Who’s Who’ of modern art. Escape to this exclusive hideaway and admire pieces by Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Lucienne Day, Salvador Dalí, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Egon Schiele and Henry Moore among others.
A witty crop of 50 Sem illustrations adds heaps of character to the walls of The Milestone, which is also a custodian of one of the world’s largest Elie Lambert collections. Look out for Louis Icart’s signature Art Deco style in Thoroughbreds, Le Remano and Reflections, too.
A broad collection of French caricaturist Sem’s humorous drawings brings an added gilding of prestige to Hotel 41’s stylish interiors. René Gruau’s eye-catching Blizzard poster complements Sem’s pieces beautifully.
Stay at Summer Lodge to admire the surrealist talents of Joan Miró in addition to Picasso’s 1963 Grande Maternité lithograph. In keeping with its English setting, national treasure LS Lowry’s Fairground at Daisy Nook, Mill Scene and The Schoolyard are hung here, too.
One of the top Red Carnation Hotels for amazing art, The Duke of Richmond Hotel is proud to display eight original illustrations by Walt Disney. Art buffs can also admire Amazone and Le Cavalier à la Rose by Dalí, Matisse’s Themes & Variations B5 and Picasso’s Colombe Volant.
The Tollman family is passionate about supporting South Africa’s local and emerging artists. Much of the amazing art and traditional furniture at Bushmans Kloof has been sourced from private auctions and individual collections, and locally made works and materials are used wherever possible. A highlight are the stunning ceramic tile murals by Esias Bosch, as well as canvases by Gregoire Johannes Boonzaier and a pair of geometric beaded Nguba blankets.
Kim Brooks’ Jaguar occupies pride of place at The Chesterfield Palm Beach, as does a historical print of The Vineta and a stunning Winston Churchill portrait. Beyond these, gaze up at the hand-painted ceiling in the sophisticated Leopard Lounge.
Enjoy a lovingly curated collection of amazing art at each of our Red Carnation Hotels.
