At The Montague on the Gardens, our commitment to environmental and social responsibility has a multifaceted approach, find out more about our holistic dedication to creating a positive impact on both the environment and the community below.
As part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, all lightbulbs in our meeting rooms and multiple public areas are now LED bulbs, which have a much lower energy requirement than traditional bulbs and last much longer. Additionally, we have committed to attempt paperless check-ins, meaning our registration cards are now electronically provided to guests and stored on an internal server, this reduces paper usage and improves security.
Eliminating single use plastic has been at the forefront of our efforts towards sustainability here at The Montague on the Gardens. Many of our deliveries had historically been delivered in disposable plastic containers, however having worked with our suppliers, we have now replaced these with re-useable trays. In the past we have also had laundry and dry cleaning delivered back to the hotel in protective plastic covers, this has now been swapped to re-usable suit carriers, which the laundry is now collected in.
Kitchens can waste up to 20% of food purchased, often equivalent to their total net profits, as chefs too often lack the necessary tools to accurately measure and manage waste. Here at The Montague, what gets measured gets managed, and by using data intelligently kitchens can be made more efficient. Winnow develops technology to help chefs achieve greater visibility in their kitchens and make better decisions that lead to dramatically reduced food waste and costs. In 2020, Red Carnation Hotels partnered with Winnow Solutions to tackle the issue of food waste and set targets to halve this by 2025.
At The Montague on the Gardens, we place a great significance on using premium, locally sourced products throughout the hotel as this enables us to provide exceptional service, whilst being aligned with these values. There are multiple examples throughout the Food and Beverage department, two of which are Meantime Brewing Company and Beefeater Gin.
The Montague on the Gardens has provided strong volunteering contributions to our group efforts over the last year. Several of our employees assisted the Bees For Development project, a charity which makes life better with bees by promoting sustainable beekeeping to combat poverty, build resilient livelihoods and benefit biodiversity. Also, Vicki Lawrenson, Personal Assistant to the General Manager, has been developing the relationship with the Single Homeless Project, a registered charity working to provide support, education, shelter and training for employment to those in need. The Montague have been working with them to organise a collection from staff for urgent items needed, as well as discussing where the team can assist in person.
Diversity is celebrated at The Montague on the Gardens, and a place where everyone with ability and willingness to succeed will thrive and develop. The first goal was to ensure that IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) committee was accessible for all staff throughout the property, from people who are already members, or interested in joining. We are fortunate to have a vast array of cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities within the team. One of the initiatives we have put in place is to use food as a platform to learn about each other's culture, recently Albanian day was a huge success.
We are deeply committed to protecting our environment and contributing to local causes, including phasing out single-use plastics, saving energy, reducing food waste. We are proud to also be working with the following charities and companies dedicated to bringing positive change to the world: Bees For Development, The Single Homeless Project, Meantime Brewing Company, Beefeater Gin, Winnow and Kingsdown Water.
