Michael Francis Duggan is our Operations/Project Manager and joined the Ashford Castle team 37 years ago. Here, we find out what drives and motivates him...

What was your background before you worked at Ashford Castle?

I come from a restaurant, bar and guest house background from Ballyhale Co Kilkenny, a family business in a rural setting. My father was an auctioneer and antique dealer and we specialised in bi-annual antique and collectable auctions.

What was your first experience at Ashford Castle?

I arrived on a beautiful day, the 4th of April 1983. When I saw the Castle for the first time I was in awe - I’d never seen such a vista. It was overwhelming and my first impression was that I really really wanted to be a part of this truly amazing Castle.

What were your thoughts when you saw the Castle for the first time after the restoration?

I was very very emotional and so proud to have played a small part in this amazing project.

What makes Ashford so special?

For me, it is the people.

What does a typical day at Ashford look like for you?

Every day is different and no two are the same. There are always new projects on the go, plus my team resources all the different departments with their needs, including brochures, crockery, stationery, equipment and maintenance spares, for example, marble, carpet, tiles and wall coverings.

What is your favourite part of your role?

I love it all.

What do you do to relax when you are not working?

Reading, crosswords, puzzles and walking.

What three words would you use to describe Ashford?

Unique, family and amazing.

What is the proudest achievement of your time at Ashford Castle?

Winning Manager of the Quarter after 37 years and 149 quarters!
