Stay with us at The Rubens At the Palace, or at our boutique hideaway next door, Hotel 41, and you’ll be perfectly placed to enjoy an evening of unforgettable entertainment with Hamilton in Victoria. Originally set to run from November 2017 to mid 2018, the show’s thundering success in London has since led to it being extended until June 2020. Combine the groundbreaking historical musical with any one of The Rubens' exquisite theatre dining experiences for an unforgettable theatre-going experience.
Hamilton—officially Hamilton: An American Musical—started its extraordinary show run in 2015 in New York City’s The Public Theater on Broadway. Soon after, it had taken the whole of America by storm. The script follows the tumultuous journey of the eponymous first Secretary of State (a man you’ll find on the $10 note), whose life oscillated between tragedy and triumph. Through Hamilton, his relatively forgotten story has been brought to theatre in captivating and exhilarating fashion, with such following that people have queued tens of hours across the country for their chance for tickets.
Hamilton caused similarly epic stirrings in London when it first opened in 2017. After much critical acclaim, winning seven Olivier Awards in 2018 (tied with 2012’s Mathilda for the most ever Olivier awards), the show has been a consistent smash hit in the capital, with locals and visitors still lining up for hours at the Victoria Palace Theatre to see it.
The show’s popularity is easy to explain, as few people have ever covered the classic rags-to-riches tale of Alexander Hamilton in such a captivating, energetic and accessible manner, with entire scripts delivered like stichomythic rap lyrics. Liberating the tales of the American Founding Fathers from dusty, historical tomes, Hamilton paints several colourful profiles of titans such as George Washington, James Madison and John Adams.
No portrait is quite so compelling, however, as Hamilton’s own: a story in which he is orphaned, moves from the Caribbean to America, and climbs—as well as falls down—the greasy pole of politics via a series of romantic escapades.
This combination of contemporary cool and historical substance has won the musical both critical and popular plaudits. And with rosters of A-list supporters—from Barack Obama and Emma Watson to Kanye West and Oprah Winfrey—the UK production has worked hard to replicate the grandeur of its American counterpart, which won an incredible 11 Tony Awards, a Grammy and a Pulitzer Prize.
The man behind the UK production is Cameron Mackintosh, a West End veteran with impressive credentials (producing no less than Cats, Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera, to name just a few) and the generous budget that most shows can only dream of—£30 million was splashed on the Victoria Palace Theatre, formerly home to Billy Elliot. Lin-Manuel Miranda, the writer and lead of the US musical, has passed the torch of Alexander Hamilton to British actor Karl Queensborough, an esteemed veteran of Shakespeare’s Globe and London’s West End.
