Shakespeare's Globe Theatre was rebuilt on its original site on the South Bank in 1997, a short walk from the spot where the first Globe stood in 1599. The Bankside area was outside the jurisdiction of the City of London in the Elizabethan period – which is precisely why the theatres, bear-baiting rings, and other entertainments clustered here. The authorities had no power to close them. The current building uses materials and construction methods as close to the original as modern knowledge permits.Nearby, in the vaults beneath Southwark Cathedral, John Harvard – founder of the American university – was baptised in 1607. Inside the cathedral, a small chapel is dedicated to him. Shakespeare's GlobeLATE MORNING: BLOOMSBURY & THE PRINTED WORDTake a taxi north to Bloomsbury – the neighbourhood that gave its name to one of the most consequential intellectual circles in English literature. Virginia Woolf lived at 46 Gordon Square; E.M. Forster, John Maynard Keynes, and Lytton Strachey were her neighbours.The British Museum anchors the area and its Reading Room – a perfect copper dome now open to the public as a gallery space – was where Karl Marx wrote Das Kapital, where Dickens researched for his novels, and where Bram Stoker is said to have conceived Dracula. Ask a member of staff to show you where the catalogue drawers once stood.Persephone Books, on Lamb's Conduit Street nearby, republishes neglected novels by mid-century women writers in elegant grey editions. It is a very particular kind of bookshop and unlike anything else in London. The British MuseumLUNCH: THE LAMB, BLOOMSBURYThe Lamb on Lamb's Conduit Street is a Victorian pub with original 'snob screens' – hinged glass panels that allowed Victorian drinkers to conduct transactions with bar staff without being seen by those on the other side. Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath are among those who drank here. It is the perfect place for a sandwich and a quiet half pint.AFTERNOON: COVENT GARDEN & LITERARY LONDONCovent Garden's Theatre Royal Drury Lane is the oldest theatre site in London – a theatre has stood here since 1663, when the first was licensed by Charles II shortly after the Restoration. Rule's Restaurant on Maiden Lane, established in 1798, fed Dickens, Thackeray, and Graham Greene. Its walls are hung with the portraits and caricatures of its regulars; it is worth a drink at the bar upstairs simply to stand in the room.From Covent Garden, walk to Charing Cross Road for its second-hand bookshops – Any Amount of Books and Quinto are among the survivors of what was once the bookselling capital of the world.
