The V&A is vast – resist the temptation to see everything and instead seek out the unexpected: on the exterior façade of the Henry Cole Wing (facing Exhibition Road), look closely at the stonework. You will find blast damage from the Second World War, deliberately preserved as a permanent memorial.Inside, the Medieval & Renaissance Galleries contain the Becket Casket – a small, extraordinary reliquary made in Limoges around 1180, now one of the most important objects of the period in existence. Few visitors find it. The Cast Courts – two vast Victorian halls housing plaster casts of Trajan's Column and Michelangelo's David – are also hidden gems no one visits and are among the most astonishing rooms in London. Turner's The Fighting TemeraireLATE MORNING: THE NATIONAL GALLERYAt the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square, bypass the main entrance crowds and enter via the Sainsbury Wing. Head directly to Room 66: Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait repays long looking – thetiny convex mirror in the background reflects the entire room, including two additional figures. Inside, Poets' Corner holds the graves and memorials of Chaucer, Dickens, Hardy, and Kipling – and, unexpectedly, a stone for the American poet Longfellow. The floor itself is a medieval mosaic of extraordinary complexity. The result is one of the most extraordinary interiors in London. The basement holds the sarcophagus of the Egyptian pharaoh Seti I, which Soane acquired for £2,000 after the British Museum turned it down. When it was delivered, he removed a wall of the house to winch it in, then threw a three-day party. In the Picture Room, hinged wall panels conceal a further set of paintings behind the first – and behind those, the hidden Nymph's Recess, with a Turner inside.The Drawing Office – a room that thousands of visitors have walked beneath without realising – is now open twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2pm. It is a freestanding floor suspended on pillars within a double-height space: a room hidden inside another room. First come, first served; groups of six maximum.Dennis Severs' House18 Folgate Street, SpitalfieldsIn 1979, a Californian artist named Dennis Severs bought a derelict Georgian terraced house in Spitalfields and spent the next twenty years turning it into something that defies classification. His stated aim was to create a 'still-life drama': ten rooms arranged as though a family of Huguenot silk weavers had only just left – half-eaten food on the table, an overturned teacup, wigs discarded on chairs, the smell of the period woven into the fabric of the rooms. Severs lived in the house as he imagined his imaginary family would have done, sleeping in every room in turn. David Hockney described a visit as one of the world's great opera experiences. The house is run today much as Severs intended, with fires, candles, and fresh food replenished daily. Visitors are asked not to speak. The motto of the house is Aut Visum Aut Non: “You either see it, or you don't.”The evening candlelit visit is the one to book. Approaching the door under the gas lantern, in silence, the experience begins before you ring the bell. Photography is not permitted inside, which forces a kind of attention that most museum visits do not.Leighton House12 Holland Park Road, KensingtonFrom the outside, Leighton House looks like a handsome but unremarkable Victorian townhouse. Inside is one of the most remarkable interiors in London. Frederic Leighton, President of the Royal Academy, built his studio-home over thirty years and described it privately as his 'palace of art'. Leighton holds the distinction of the shortest peerage in British history: elevated to Baron Leighton on 24th January 1896, he died the following day. The house became a museum that same year.The heart of the house is the Arab Hall, constructed in 1877–81 to display his collection of 16th and 17th-century Islamic tiles brought back from Damascus – its gilded dome, peacock frieze by Walter Crane, and central fountain created the most talked-about interior in Victorian London. Look for the giant vertical door in the first-floor studio – built to allow large canvases to be extracted. And the three fireplaces, each placed beneath a window; the smoke travels through horizontal flues hidden beneath the windowsills, meaning there are no visible chimneys anywhere in the building.Spencer House Spencer House27 St James's Place The ancestral London home of the Spencer family – and therefore of Princess Diana – is one of the last surviving aristocratic townhouses of its period in London, and almost certainly the finest. Built between 1756 and 1766 for John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer, and his wife Georgiana (a rare Georgian love match; they married secretly, fearing family disapproval), it contains some of the earliest fully realised neoclassical interiors in England. The Palm Room is exceptional – Georgian neoclassicism approaching the heights of Rococo. The house was used as offices during and after the Second World War, at which point architectural fittings were removed to Althorp for safekeeping and never entirely returned. A ten-year restoration directed by Lord Rothschild brought it back to its 18th-century condition. Tours run on Sundays only.Apsley House149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park CornerKnown as Number One, London – the first house encountered by travellers entering the city from the west – Apsley House was the London home of the Duke of Wellington and remains so today, the current Duke retaining a private apartment in the northern half of the building. The collection is extraordinary: 83 paintings from the Spanish Royal Collection, given by a grateful King Ferdinand VII after Wellington defeated Napoleon, hang in the 28-metre Waterloo Gallery alongside Velázquez, Rubens, and Titian. At the foot of the main staircase stands an eleven-foot marble statue of Napoleon by Canova, depicting the Emperor as a classical god. Napoleon disliked it intensely – he felt no resemblance – and had it hidden in the Louvre. Wellington purchased it as a war trophy. The house is managed by English Heritage but the Duke still lives here, making it the only English Heritage property where the original family remains in residence.Apsley House and St Paul's reward a combined visit: Wellington and Nelson are buried within a few metres of one another at the latter. In the crypt of Nelson's tomb at St Paul's, his sarcophagus was originally made for Cardinal Wolsey in the 1520s – it lay unused for nearly three centuries after Henry VIII's falling-out with his chancellor.St Paul's CathedralSt Paul's CathedralLudgate Hill, City of LondonSt Paul's is one of the great acts of architectural deception in the world. When you look up at the dome from inside, and when you see it from the street, you are looking at two entirely different structures. Wren built three nested domes: an outer dome of timber and lead for the skyline, an inner dome for the interior proportions, and between them a hidden brick cone that actually bears the weight of the stone lantern above. The painted ceiling you see from the floor is not the inside of the dome – it is the inside of the middle cone, painted to create the illusion of looking upward into a cylindrical space. When a labourer handed Wren a piece of rubble to mark the centre point of the new cathedral's foundations, the stone was inscribed with a single Latin word: Resurgam – “I shall rise again.” Wren had it carved into the cathedral's south pediment, beneath a phoenix.Book a Triforium Tour to access the hidden library designed by Wren and Hawksmoor in 1709, and the Drawing Office model room, which holds Wren's Great Model: the design he preferred that was rejected.The Albert Memorial Kensington Gardens Most visitors pass the Albert Memorial without stopping to read it. Commissioned by Queen Victoria after Prince Albert's death in 1861 and completed in 1876, it is the most elaborate memorial to a single individual in London, and arguably in the country. The 14-foot gilded statue of Albert at its centre shows him holding the catalogue of the Great Exhibition – the 1851 event he conceived and organised, the profits from which funded the entire museum district of South Kensington that surrounds him. The Frieze of Parnassus running around the base contains 169 individually carved figures representing the greatest painters, poets, musicians, architects, and sculptors in Western history. For eighty years the statue was painted black – thought to have been done during the First World War to avoid reflections guiding Zeppelin bombers, though research suggests the blackening may have pre-dated 1914. The gold was restored in 1998. Albert himself explicitly stated he did not want a monument. He was ignored comprehensively.Draw a straight line south from the memorial through the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal College of Music, and the Science Museum to the central entrance of the Natural History Museum. They are precisely aligned. This was not coincidence – the entire district was planned as Albert's legacy, and the memorial was positioned as its northern point of origin.The places featured here span centuries of creativity, ambition, and imagination, yet they represent only a fraction of the treasures waiting to be discovered across the capital.
