Xigera’s unique location within the heart of the Okavango Delta brings with it a huge responsibility act as custodians to the land we inhabit. A commitment to sustainability and to supporting our local communities drives our food philosophy here at Xigera, and local farming is key part of this. Empowering local suppliers and farmers is a priority in every aspect of our lodge operations.
In a recent development to our sustainability programme, we have partnered with The Bellfrog Inn, who run a Maun-based hydroponic farm on the banks of the Boro River. Hydroponics is an incredibly sustainable way of farming, as the vertical farming system results in less land and water usage and there is no need for soil treatment and fertilizers.
Hydroponic farming ensures that whatever is grown matures to a perfect, consistent quality. Farming conditions in the outer delta are incredibly difficult to manage due to the intense heat and variable soil quality. By pioneering a hydroponic system in this region, our local farmer is ensuring guests have access to the freshest, highest quality produce, year-round.
This is farming for the future, an incredible initiative that benefits both producer and buyer, right on our doorstep. We look forward to this relationship blossoming over time and we are incredibly proud to be at the forefront of food sustainability in our region.
